Thank you so much for choosing me to document your family during this sweet season of life. I consider it an honor and promise to put my heart into capturing shared moments with your family that you will cherish forever.
I've created a guide to help you prepare for your newborn lifestyle session. I assure you, there's not much that you need to do! The purpose of a lifestyle sessions is to capture "real" life as your family knows it right now. Don't worry if things aren't perfect - that's life! All you have to be ready to do is love on your sweet baby and I will take care of the rest.
What about scheduling?
I have your due date on my calendar to reserve your session. Once you and your family are home and settled in, I ask that you text me so that we can decide on a day and time for me to come over. Newborn sessions typically take place during the week, anytime morning-afternoon. I like to give you a few days home to decide when you think the most ideal time for me to come over would be. Working with you and the baby's schedule is important to me!
If something happens and you need to reschedule, I ask that you text or call me as soon as possible. I understand that life with a newborn can sometimes be unexpected and am happy to work with you.
What should we expect?
Expect the session to be very laid back and easy going. I don't like to put a time limit on newborn sessions, since newborns can be unpredictable. This gives plenty of time for you to feed and change the baby if and when it's needed. This is to be expected and something that I don't mind at all! Our main goal is to keep the baby happy. I always tell my clients that I will not be asking you to "look and smile" at the camera very often. I guide you along as you interact with one another and the baby. You can expect to have lots of snuggle time with your little one and to spend most of the time admiring your little creation.
You should also know that I won't be doing a lot of heavy posing with your family or the baby. Since this is a lifestyle session, I strive to capture what "real life" may look like for your family during this season of life. In my opinion, those are the moments you'll cherish forever, and those are the moments I'm passionate about documenting for you. I have found that guiding you and allowing you space to interact with one another, versus heavy posing, is the way to capture those moments.
If you haven't already, you can take a look at my recent Newborn Lifestyle work to help you get an even better idea of what to expect.
What should I have ready before the session?
Since this is a lifestyle session you'll already have everything you need for the session. I recommend having the outfit(s) you would like your baby to wear set aside and ready. If you have other accessories such as hats, headbands or bows you can have those set aside also. I also suggest choosing several of your favorite blankets and swaddles to choose from during the session. Don't worry if you don't have swaddles or blankets that you want to use, I always bring several as backup!
You can also have payment ready (check payable to "Kelly Lovan") OR I'd be happy to email you an invoice for payment via credit or debit. Whichever is easiest for you!
Where will we be taking the photos?
When I get to your home I will have you show me around so that I can find rooms with ideal lighting. The majority of photos typically take place in the nursery, master bedroom (on the bed), living area, and possibly outdoors (weather permitting). If you can clear any large clutter from these areas that will be helpful, but don't worry about everything looking perfect. If you'd prefer not to shoot in any of these areas that's totally fine. There will be plenty of ideal spots in your home to shoot in.
What should we wear?
I always suggest simple clothing options, for several reasons. One, neutral and/or soft colors photograph very well and compliment the baby's skin tone. Another reason is so that the focus is mostly on the baby. If you are wearing really bright colors and/or bold patterns it can distract from the baby.
I also suggest simple, sweet clothing for the baby since it helps keep the focus on the the baby's precious details. I don't recommend having more than 2-3 outfits for the baby since it tends to get your little one fussy and uncomfortable. If you have any bows, headbands or hats you can have those set aside for us to use.
I've created a Pinterest board with ideas of types of clothing styles and colors that are ideal for newborn sessions (for both the parents/family and the newborn). Don't worry if the photos don't portray your style, but it would be helpful to pay attention to the color pallets and patterns.
How long will it take for us to get our photos?
Unless you ask me not to, I will have a few "sneak peeks" posted on social media (FB and IG) within a few days of your session. Your final gallery will be emailed to you within two weeks of your session date.
Any questions I didn't answer? Send me a text or call me and I'd be happy to chat in more detail with you!
