Thank you so much for choosing me to document your sweet family. I consider it an honor and promise to put my heart into capturing shared moments with your family that you will cherish forever.
I've created a guide to help you prepare for your family session.
What about scheduling?
By this point we should already have scheduled a date for your session. If we're doing an outdoor location, my favorite times to shoot are either early morning or about an hour before sunset to ensure we have the prettiest lighting. If we are doing indoors, then mid-morning to afternoon is best since I use all natural lighting and want as much sunlight coming through the windows as possible.
What should we expect?
Expect the session to be very laid back and easy going. Whether you have booked an indoor or outdoor session, my style and ways in which I guide you are very similar. You will interact with one another, be silly, laugh, and sneak in some hugs and kisses now and then. My goal is to capture REAL moments shared between you and your loved ones, and I have found that placing you in stiff, awkward poses just doesn't work for me. I always make sure to get a good "look at the camera and smile photo", but the majority of the moments we capture will be candid and real. The most important thing that I ask is that you come to the session with an open-mind and without any expectations. If you do this, we are guaranteed to have a wonderful time and capture special and fun moments!
Worried about your children misbehaving? Don't! Kids are kids, and I do not expect them to be well behaved and do exactly what I say the entire time. That's why I encourage interacting with one another and going with the flow. We oftentimes follow the children's lead, which makes for a much more enjoyable experience. I taught preschool and elementary school for six years and now teach early childhood courses at Ivy Tech, so I can say with confidence that I will be just fine directing your kiddo(s) and making sure we get great photos. :)
Specific details are based on which type of session you have chosen (indoor or outdoors), which we can discuss over the phone at some point before your session date. If you haven't already, you can check out some of my recent family work to learn more about what to expect (link below).
What should I have ready before the session?
Outfits, accessories (hats, bows, etc), specific items your children love or enjoy playing with (favorite blanket or stuffed animal, books, kite, bubbles, etc). If an outdoor session, you can bring along a blanket to sit on (if you have one in particular you'd like to use); if not, I have plenty to choose from.
You can also have payment ready: cash, check, or I'd be happy to email you an invoice for payment via credit or debit. Whichever is easiest for you!
What should we wear?
I recommend simple clothing pieces for both indoor and outdoor sessions. I do not suggest bold colors and/or patterns. I've created a Pinterest board to help you with ideas. Don't worry if the photos don't portray your style - instead pay attention to the color palettes and patterns, as most all of the examples shown photograph well togther.
What if it rains?
If you have booked an outdoor session, we will pay close attention to the weather forecast the week leading up to your session date. If it is overcast or if there's a small chance of rain, we go ahead with the session. If it's raining or a high chance of bad weather, we will look at the calendar and choose an alternative date that works for the both of us.
How long will it take for us to get our photos?
Unless you ask me not to, I will have a few "sneak peeks" posted on social media (FB and IG) within a few days of your session. Your final gallery will be emailed to you within two weeks of your session date.
Any questions I didn't answer? Send me a text or call me and I'd be happy to chat in more detail with you!
